About Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid is responsible for the electricity distribution network that powers everyday life for 8 million customers across 3.9 million homes and business in the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

Northern Powergrid is committed to making flexibility a key part of powering the UK towards net zero by 2050. We recently published our draft ED2 Business Plan which highlights the use of flexibility as a key part of our ‘Monitor, Manage, Reinforce’ approach to network management.  We see flexibility as a fundamental means to efficiently manage well-targeted network utilisation and reinforcement needs. Optimising flexibility enables us to manage peaks in generation and demand on our network, which means we can get the best value out of our existing network and the investments we make, maximising cost efficiency for all customers. We want all of our customers to be able to financially benefit from offering flexibility to the whole energy system. Effectively adapting our business and driving this market development is at the heart of our DSO Strategy.

Flexible Power is a great example of putting our plans into practice: working collaboratively with other industry partners to facilitate a more efficient electricity network for customers.

We don’t currently have any flexibility procurement windows live and we won’t be launching a tender for our Summer 2021 window.  Keep an eye on this page for news of future competitions. You can find more detail about our approach and intentions for flexibility procurement in our Distribution Flexibility Services Procurement Statement
