About Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid is responsible for the electricity distribution network that powers everyday life for 8 million customers across 3.9 million homes and business in the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

Northern Powergrid is committed to making flexibility a key part of powering the UK towards net zero by 2050. We recently published our  ED2 Business Plan which highlights the use of flexibility as a key part of our ‘Monitor, Manage, Reinforce’ approach to network management.  We see flexibility as a fundamental means of efficiently managing well-targeted network utilisation and reinforcement needs. Optimising flexibility enables us to manage peaks in generation and demand on our network, which means we can get the best value out of our existing network and the investments we make, maximising cost efficiency for all customers. We want all of our customers to be able to financially benefit from offering flexibility to the whole energy system. Effectively adapting our business and driving this market development is at the heart of our DSO Strategy.

Flexible Power is a great example of putting our plans into practice: working collaboratively with other industry partners to facilitate a more efficient electricity network for customers.

We are always interested talking to potential providers of flexibility services. Click on the 'Where are we procuring?' link at the bottom of this page to find out more about where we are likely to be seeking flexibility services in the future. Keep an eye on these pages for news of future competitions. You can find more detail about our approach and intentions for flexibility procurement in our latest Distribution Flexibility Services Procurement Statement on the Useful Documents Page.
